Embassy of Hungary, Vienna

On the 20th of March in 2015 the Association of Diplomacy in Practice visited Vienna and spent a colourful and informative day at the Embassy of Hungary. The honorable János Perényi, Hungarian Ambassador to Austria and his colleagues (Consul Anna Biró-Kerekes, First Secretary Gábor Hajas, Attaché for Foreign Trade Márk Mautner and Attaché for Media and Internal Affairs Gergő Szilágyi) welcomed us in the concert hall where cultural events usually take place. The honorable Ambassador and his colleagues briefly talked about their scope of activities and then answered our questions in connection to their professions, the Austrian-Hungarian economic relations, the Austrian domestic politics and the Hungarian community currently working and living in the country.

Later one of the staff showed us around the embassy. The building of the Hungarian Embassy is a genuine curiosum of Vienna since it is one of the oldest and most prestigious constructions in the Austrian capital. This is the only embassy where the hall of mirrors are made of real Venetian mirrors. The huge halls are decorated with gilt stucco, ancient furniture and you can find a notable painting in almost every room.

During the afternoon Lilla Mergl guided us through downtown Vienna. We visited the precincts of Schottenstift, Votivkirche, (Ring straBe), Universität Wien, Burgtheater, Rathaus, Parlament, Volksgarten, Hofburg, Augistinerkirche, Albertina, Oper, Burggarten, Schmetterlinghaus, Maria-Theresia Platz, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Naturhistorisches Museum, Museums Quartier and Volkstheater. After the impromptu tour we wandered around in the city for a while, then we left for home in the evening.

Finally, we would like to thank Mr. Perényi for the kind invitation that made our visit even more extraordinary and memorable.
